What is car key programming?

Every modern key contains a tiny transponder chip with a unique code. Your car's immobiliser checks that code before allowing the engine to start — it's why a copied high-street key won't start a modern car.

Programming writes your car's recognised codes into the new key (and registers the key with the car). It requires specialist diagnostic tools connected to your vehicle's OBD port — plus the security knowledge to do it correctly.

Programming vs cloning — what's the difference?

Cloning copies an existing key's data onto a blank — quick and cheap, but it creates an identical twin (fine for a spare). True programming registers a new, unique key with the car's immobiliser — required when all keys are lost, or when you want old keys deleted (e.g. after theft).

Keyless security: protecting keyless cars

Keyless entry cars can be targeted by relay theft — criminals amplify your key's signal from inside your house. We advise on protection: signal-blocking pouches (Faraday), steering locks, and where to keep keys overnight.
